How to buy an engagement ring in Vancouver

A calm, order-of-operations guide from a private house: budget, stone, setting, timing, and the questions to ask anyone who sells to you.

Buying an engagement ring is a project most people run exactly once, under pressure, in a market built to exploit exactly that. This is the order of operations we would give a friend in Vancouver, whether or not they buy from us.

First, the budget

Ignore the salary rules. They were invented by advertisers, and the advertisers have moved on. The recent US wedding studies put average engagement ring spend around 4,600 US dollars, with natural stone buyers near 7,000 and lab-grown buyers near 4,300. Those are averages, not targets. The right budget is the number you can pay without wincing, decided before you fall in love with a stone, because every showroom in the city is arranged to reverse that order.

In British Columbia, remember the tax: 12 per cent GST plus PST lands on top of the sticker. Build it into the budget on day one, not at the till.

Second, the stone type

Natural or lab-grown is the biggest fork in the road and it deserves an honest hour. The short version: lab buys roughly twice the size at the same money and will not hold its price; natural is rarer, dearer and permanent in a way that matters to some hands and not to others. The long version, with the live comparison, is in our guide to natural and lab-grown stones. Decide this before you shop. It halves the noise.

Third, the stone itself

Learn the 4 C's once, from our plain guide, then spend your attention where the eye actually looks: cut first, always. A well-cut stone one grade down in colour and clarity beats a poorly cut stone with a prettier certificate, at a lower price, every time. Insist on an independent report from IGI or GIA and verify the number on the laboratory's own site before you pay. Then insist on seeing the stone itself, because two identical certificates are routinely two different stones.

Fourth, the setting and the timing

The setting is where daily life happens: a solitaire shows the most stone, a halo reads larger, a bezel survives a busy hand. Choose the metal she already wears. For timing, a made-to-order piece in our atelier takes 3 to 4 weeks once the stone is chosen; allow more in the December rush. Working back from a proposal date, start six to eight weeks out and the whole project stays calm.

Live from our inventory, market-priced to the dollar. Every stone carries an independent report, and every report is verifiable at the laboratory.

Questions to ask anyone who sells to you

The report
Which independent laboratory graded this stone, and can I verify the report number myself right now?
The screen
How do you screen against undisclosed lab-grown or treated stones, and will you put the stone's origin in writing?
The price
Why is this the price, and what happens to it if I walk out and come back tomorrow? An honest price does not move.
The make
Beyond the grades, why is this particular stone beautiful? A seller who cannot answer has not looked.

Asked, answered plainly

How much should I spend on an engagement ring?

What you can spend without wincing. The old salary rules were marketing. Recent studies put the average around four to five thousand dollars US, with natural-stone buyers averaging closer to seven. The right number is yours, and a good jeweller works to it without judgement.

How long does a custom engagement ring take in Vancouver?

Allow three to four weeks for a made-to-order piece in our atelier once the stone is chosen, longer in the December rush. Working back from a proposal date, start the conversation six to eight weeks out.

Should the ring be a surprise?

The proposal should be. The ring often should not. Most couples now choose or shortlist together. If you want full surprise, learn the ring size and the metal she already wears, and choose a classic setting a stone can be reset into.
